All staff members are provided comfortable housing. Cabin Counselors reside in modern cabins with 10-12 campers (Junior Campus) or 18-24 campers (Teen Campus). Each camper cabin has its own bathroom that includes 4-5 sinks, 3-7 private shower stalls, and 3-7 private toilets. Support Staff (food service & maintenance) reside in modern dormitory-style cabins with their peers, and do not live with the campers. Senior Staff are provided a comfortable bedroom with a private full bathroom, and do not reside with the campers. Some staff share a room with another adult. Camp Nurses, who reside in the Health Center, are provided a private bedroom with a private full bathroom. All sleeping quarters are equipped with smoke detectors, electrical outlets, a closet, screened windows, hot/cold water, and cubbies for personal belongings. All cabins are centrally located and easily accessible to the dining hall, health center, and activity sites.
We take a lot of pride in the quality of food we serve to our staff and campers. Our chefs prepare 3 well-balanced, nutritious meals daily. The menu changes daily and rotates every 14 days. It’s prepared by a licensed dietician, and appeals to the taste buds of a camper on a normal diet. Vegetarian meals and entrée alternatives (leftovers) are available. Although rigid dietary guidelines are not observed, we serve neither pork nor shellfish. Our meats, fish, vegetables, and fruit are of the very best quality. Everyone is encouraged to eat as much as they'd like, and no one ever leaves the dining hall hungry! The kitchen staff is comprised of a Food Service Manager, 2 Restaurant-Trained Chefs, 2 Assistant Cooks, and 18 crew members.
Cayuga provides a free laundry service to its staff members. The laundering of your clothing and linens is done weekly by a commercial laundry company. There are local laundromats in Honesdale for those individuals who prefer to do their own laundering on their nights or days off.
There isn't much free time at camp for anyone! Our campers are ‘in-action’ from morning until bedtime, and for the most part, the same holds true for our staff, especially our cabin counselors. (Click here for Daily Time Schedule.) After an action-packed day, co-cabin counselors rotate their free time in the evenings at the game room and staff lounge. For other staff, free-time will vary depending upon the individual’s position and responsibilities. Typically, during free-time staff hang-out at the game room and staff lounge, which features satellite TV and internet. It's a cozy place reserved exclusively for staff.
All staff members receive 1 day-off for every 10 days of employment. A night-off is always scheduled on the evening preceding the day-off, which amounts to 29+ consecutive hours of free time. For instance, if your day-off is Thursday, you’re permitted to depart camp on Wednesday at 7:00pm, and need not return to camp until after midnight on Thursday evening. In this example, curfew is actually 12:30am on Friday. It’s a nice block of free time, and affords the opportunity to visit neighboring Pocono Mountain attractions, including Bushkill Falls, Delaware River White Water Rafting, Pocono Downs Horse Racing, Pocono Raceway (Nascar), Lake Wallenpaupack Boat Rentals, Golf Courses, Apple Day Spa & Salon, Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, The Crossings Premium Outlets, Viewmont Mall, and Mohegan Sun Pocono Racetrack & Casino, to name a few. When venturing beyond the Poconos, many staff visit places like New York City, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Incidentally, Camp Cayuga is only 7 miles from the village of Honesdale (the birthplace of the American Railroad). It’s a fast-growing community offering many conveniences, such as sandwich & coffee shops, pizzerias, diner & restaurants (Chinese, Mexican, Italian, American), fast food (McDonalds, Wendy's), Dunkin Donuts, Walmart, Home Depot, thrift shops, movie theatre, laundromats, car rental service, auto repair shops, and plenty of gas stations. Off-duty staff members have access to most camp facilities and activities when the use doesn't interfere with the camper's activity program.
